NHL Players and the Olympics - Opinion Piece 2

     Few things entice such nation-wide excitement as does watching team Canada compete in men’s hockey at the Olympic Winter Games. Even more so, if a gold medal is on the line. However, for the 2018 Winter Games held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the National Hockey League chose not to send its players to compete. This caused quite the rift, as many individuals- both players and fans, were upset by this decision. Having NHL players compete and represent their respective countries at the Olympics is something that is uplifting for the country as a whole and provides valuable experience and memories for those partaking in the competition. Hockey is generally one of the most anticipated sports of the Olympics, particularly in Canada. So it’s quite a shock knowing that in a global event like the Winter Games, in which the best in the world compete against each other, the hockey players competing in South Korea were not in fact the very best in the world.    ...
